Enjoy The Holidays While Keeping Healthy

The holidays (for many of us) tend to be filled with lots of events, family gatherings, parties, etc. That means lots of tasty foods, desserts, and drinks. These factors make it TOUGH to maintain weight, or even lose weight.  Don’t worry! Here are some easy tips to help you enjoy the holidays without gaining extra pounds.

1. Set Realistic Goals

Instead of trying to lose weight, consider trying to maintain your current weight until the holidays are over.

2. Watch Your Portions

When it comes to holiday meals, pay attention to how much you eat. Use smaller plates to help you take smaller servings. You can still enjoy your favorite foods, just enjoy appropriate serving sizes. !

3. Keep Moving

Staying active is a great way to help manage those extra calories. Any form of exercise for at least 30 minutes most days is recommended. You can go for a walk, dance, do bodyweight exercises at home, etc. If you want to effectively use those extra calories to improve your body then consider lifting weights and focusing on increasing your strength.

4. Drink Plenty of Water

Sometimes we think we’re hungry when we’re really just thirsty. Make sure to drink enough water throughout the day. Try to have a glass of water before bed and upon waking to help you feel full and eat less.

5. Eat Mindfully

Take your time when eating. Chew slowly and enjoy each bite. When possible, eat without distractions like phones, TV’s, music, etc. Being present with yourself while eating helps your body know when it’s full, so you don’t eat too much.

6. Plan Ahead

When you can, pick healthier options. Fill your plate with veggies, lean meats, and whole grains. You can still have your favorite holiday dishes, just in moderation. If you know you will be having a BIG meal, keep eating light until that meal.

7. Eat Smarter

It might be tempting to skip meals before a big holiday feast, but that can lead to overeating. Try eating your protein & veggies before anything else. This will help you eat less overall while still being able to enjoy all of your favorite foods.
